Lisbon 2: Stay With Europe & Vote Yes
The summer break is coming to a close and the next big event in the political world is the second Lisbon Treaty referendum on October 2nd.
The Labour Party is advocating a Yes vote becuase we believe working with Europe is in the best interests of Ireland and its people.
We have launched a new website called www.labourforeurope.ie which will provide comprehensive arguments as to why Ireland should vote Yes.
Why do I think we should vote Yes? I think EU membership has both promoted and protected Irish interests over the last 30 years. We shouldn’t take this for granted.
The current economic crisis has shown the benefits of EU membership. The euro has helped our economy survive the dark days of last autumn when the Credit Crunch rocked the global banking system. Our banks are still relying on ECB support to survive.
If we still had the punt instead of the euro we probably would have experienced an economic catastrophe like Iceland did last year.
In Dublin South East, Labour will be launching on a door-to-door campaign, much like we did during the Local and European elections a few months ago. We plan to distribute 20,000 pieces of literature and ensure that Dublin South East votes Yes to Lisbon for the second time!
